PERSPECTIVE OF THE INSTITUTE
PROCESS SOCIOLOGY IN CROSS-CULTURAL AND CIVILIZATIONAL STUDIES

Introduction:
"Process sociology," a term developed and favored by the sociologist Norbert Elias, atempts to examine social realities not only from the point of view of present-time, but also from the perspective of historical, economic and psychological processes that have been a long time in the making. This historically-informed approach allows a multi-disciplinary (and multi-variate) study of specific social phenomenon within an ecology of continuing social change. The links below provide an introduction to "process" and "figurational" sociology and point to how it can be used in both macro and micro studies. The method is particularly useful in studies of globalization and civilizational change because, very often, practices formed in the past, unexpected developments in the present, and the need for future sustainability and cooperation are often interdependent---a thorough understanding of the transitional and interactive nature of norms and values further helps clarify the design and analysis of research. As can be expected, such a trans-disciplinary approach requires the lifting of professional compartmentalizations...between disciplines as well as within a given discipline. Such a process of insight allows us to understand the rich configurations around which social relations, social action and social structure are woven in an increasingly interdependent world.... Benet Davetian

Norbert Elias (from Über den Prozess der Zivilisation (The Civilizing Process).
"the interweaving of innumerable individual interests and intentions---be they compatible,
or opposed and inimical---something eventually emerges that, as it turns out, has neither
been planned nor intended by any single individual. And yet it has been brought about by
the intentions and actions of many individuals. And this is actually the whole secret of social
interweaving---of its compellingness, its regularity, its structure, its processual nature, and its
development; this is the secret of sociogenesis and social dynamics... (Norbert Elias, 1969, II, p. 221:
Über den Prozess der Zivilisation."

from What is Sociology
"The...idea that two different values correspond to two separately existing objects is becoming
fixed in the contemporary consciousness. This reinforces the image of the self as 'me in my closed box',
and of man as
Homo Clausus. The concept of configuration therefore serves as a simple conceptual tool to loosen this social constraint to speak and think as if 'the individual' and 'society' were antagonistic as well as different (Norbert Elias, 1978, What is Sociology?)."
